The Real Living Wage is championed and calculated by the Living Wage Foundation. It is a UK wage rate that is voluntarily paid by 7,000 UK businesses who believe their staff deserve a wage which meets everyday needs - like the weekly shop, or a surprise trip to the dentist. The wage calculations are over and above the Government’s National Minimum Wage because they are independently-calculated based on what people need to get by as opposed to the Government rates which are calculated based on meeting set targets for earnings.
In a survey carried out by the Living Wage Foundation, who asked full time workers earning below the real living wage what they thought would happen if their employer paid the living wage, 65% of people said it would improve their mental health, 54% said it would improve their physical health and 68% said it would improve their overall happiness. There are of course business benefits too with 75% of organisations signed up to the Real Living Wage reporting that it has increased motivation and retention rates of employees. 58% also reported improved relationships between managers and staff.
Over 250,000 employees have received a pay rise as a result of the Living Wage campaign so far. Kajima join a broad range of employers already accredited with the Foundation including two out of five of the FTSE 100 and big household names including Nationwide, Google, Brewdog, Everton and Chelsea FC.
The move to becoming Living Wage accredited was advocated by Kajima’s Social Values Forum and is just one of the initiatives planned for the coming year. The Social Values Forum at Kajima exists to ensure social value is considered not only as part of its project bidding process and its Community arm, whose business is to deliver social, physical and mental health benefits across communities via the letting of schools and other public facilities, but to instil these values across the company as a whole. The Forum has a host of company-wide initiatives on the agenda for 2021 in order to push their social value activities to the next level.
Kajima employs over 80 people across a huge variety of roles from full time asset managers to accountants, marketing assistants as well as part-time leisure staff operating within their Community department.
