The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has officially opened Springfield Park, a 32-acre public green space in South West London, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of the former Springfield University Hospital site into Springfield Village.

Delivered by STEP, a joint venture between Kajima Partnerships and Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures, the park is the largest created in London since the 2012 Olympics. It features a pavilion café, amphitheatre, play areas, sensory gardens, and over 700 newly planted trees, designed to promote wellbeing, biodiversity, and community connection.

The park is part of a wider £150 million regeneration project that has turned 82 acres of underused NHS land into a vibrant, mixed-use neighbourhood. Springfield Village features 1,288 new homes (a third of which are affordable), two state-of-the-art NHS mental health facilities, a care home, shops, cafés, and a new public square.

“This is a great example of how we can build a fairer, greener, and healthier London,” said Mayor Khan. “Springfield Park is not just a beautiful new space - it’s a symbol of community, inclusion, and progress.”

Richard Coe, Project Director at Kajima Partnerships, said: “As the private investment arm of STEP, we’ve worked closely with our partners from early design through to delivery to transform underused land into a space that benefits service users, staff, the local community and the environment. Springfield Village is more than just modern NHS facilities set within new homes and green space — it’s a blueprint for how private capital can unlock healthcare-led regeneration from the ground up.”

Harriet Gladwell-Phillips, Project Lead for STEP, said: “Springfield Park is a shining example of what can be achieved when healthcare, community, and nature come together. We are proud to have supported South West London and St George’s and the London Borough of Wandsworth in creating a park that not only enhances mental health and wellbeing but also enriches the local neighbourhood.”

The project is part of the NHS’s Better Communities Programme, aiming to invest over £1 billion across South West London by 2028. It also launched the Springfield Park Community Fund, offering £75,000 annually to support local wellbeing and nature-based projects.
