Ealing Schools

Ealing Schools supports and delivers education to over 3,700 students across its four main campuses; Brentside High School, Downe Manor Primary School, Gifford Primary School and Ravenor Primary School.

Client: Ealing Borough Council
Kajima's role: Asset Manager
Status: Operational
Key stats: 20,000 sqm

A key PFI project totalling 20,000 sqm, Ealing Schools now provides state-of-the-art, flexible educational and communal spaces for use by local communities. During the modernisation, the four schools were carefully and innovatively designed through extensive dialogue with teachers and the local council in order to give each one its own bespoke design and identity.

This was a highly collaborative project that brought together the scheme’s designers, contractors and FM providers to future-proof the facilities through a whole life cost approach for durability of design, components and equipment. One of the main challenges, to minimise disruption to the students, was overcome through the phased delivery of the newly built facilities on the existing school sites.

Through this collaborative approach, Kajima has created stunningly-designed learning spaces that are also highly functional and respond not only to the pupils’ needs of today but also to those of the local community.

Within Brentside High School, Kajima Community operates a community-use programme which sees on average, up to 1,000 visitors per week, utilising the school’s quality facilities out of hours. Programmes supporting local junior footballers, supplementary school students and Irish Dancers not only provide social and wellbeing opportunities to participants but also support 40 local business and activity providers, weekly.

The project received an award for Best Education Project over £20 million in the 2003 Public Private Finance Awards.
