Providing award-winning learning facilities to over 200,000 users, each year.
Oldham Libraries forms part of Kajima’s Information Resources Oldham project providing a centralised facility of 78,500 learning resources to Oldham’s residents.
Operated by Kajima’s team of asset managers, the library and learning centre both hold a BREEAM BRE Environmental Assessment Method rating of ‘very good’, incorporating the use of natural ventilation and light to minimise energy consumption and the installation of a sedum or living ‘green’ roof that collects rainwater which is treated and stored. The water is then pumped to flush the toilets throughout the building, significantly reducing the mains water usage.
For several years, Kajima has supported the Library with a donation towards their Summer Reading Challenge – an initiative led by The Reading Agency and delivered in partnership with public libraries across the country, funded by Arts Council England. The aim of the Challenge is to encourage children aged four to 11 years, to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure, outside of the school setting, providing lots of fun as well as helping to prevent the summer reading ‘dip’. Each year the Challenge motivates over 700,000 children to keep reading, to build their skills and confidence. Kajima’s involvement in the scheme led to it winning the Gold Standard Award for Creating Better Futures at Infrared Capital Partners’ 2023 industry awards.
The award-winning facility was also recognised as winner of the 2007 Builder and Engineer Awards, shortlisted for the Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award, and the British Construction Industry awards in 2007 and for the LABC Built in Quality awards, 2006.
