Springfield University Hospital

State-of-the-art mental health facilities that are part of the community.

Client: South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust
Kajima's role: Developer
Status: Under construction

Daylight, nature, quiet, connection and community: these are the principles behind places that help us to thrive. Yet, all too often, an individual in the throes of crisis will find themselves on a ward that better resembles a prison.

Springfield Village is a joint venture from Kajima and Sir Robert McAlpine (STEP), working with the NHS to create state-of-the-art mental health facilities that are pushing forward the forefront of new treatments, research and care. Set amid 32 acres of parkland, Springfield uses the latest insights to provide the best possible environment in which to recover.

This is more than a hospital. With 839 new homes, shops and land for a new school included on site, Springfield is a fully integrated community with the potential to also catalyse the revitalisation of surrounding Tooting. The park will be open for the local community to use at all times, offering a cafe, sensory gardens, play areas and a youth shelter designed by students from St John Bosco College secondary school.

Homes combine imposing Grade II Listed buildings that date back to the site’s opening in 1840 with sustainable new builds in complementary brickwork and palette.

With its design informed by over 400 meetings with NHS service users, doctors, nurses, locals and more, Springfield Village aims to break down stigma around mental health treatment through a beautiful place that brings all of its different residents and visitors together.
